How to Measure a Jar Candle for a Candle Holder

Jar candles come in many shapes and sizes, so the safest way to choose a holder, lid or extinguisher is to measure the candle you already own. You only need two numbers.

What you need

  • A ruler or tape measure
  • The jar candle, unlit and cool

Step 1: Measure the width at the widest point

Place the ruler across the top of the jar and measure from outside edge to outside edge. If the jar bulges in the middle or has a wider base, measure there instead. Always use the widest point, including any lip or rim.

Step 2: Measure the full height

Stand the candle on a flat surface and measure from the table to the highest point of the jar. If your candle has a lid, measure without it, since the lid comes off when you burn the candle. Include the wick if it stands above the rim.

Step 3: Compare with the holder

Check both numbers against the holder's maximum candle size. Both the width and the height need to fit.

For ALEC:

  • Small (body 5.28" wide × 6.25" tall) holds jar candles up to 5" wide and 5" tall.
  • Large (body 5.00" wide × 7.50" tall) is made for taller jar candles. It is slightly slimmer than Small, so check your jar's width as well as its height.

See the ALEC fit guide for details, or contact us with your measurements and we will help you choose.

Quick tips

  • Measure the actual candle, not the size printed on a website listing.
  • Candles of the same brand can come in different jar shapes, so measure each style you use.
  • Leave a little room around the jar so it is easy to place and remove.
