What Is an Automatic Candle Extinguisher? How a Timed Candle Lid Works
An automatic candle extinguisher is a device that puts out a candle flame on its own, usually after a set amount of time. Instead of blowing the candle out or reaching for a snuffer, you set a timer and the device takes care of the last step.
How a timed candle lid works
The simplest and cleanest way to put out a flame is to take away its oxygen. A timed candle lid does exactly that:
- You place a jar candle in the holder. The holder keeps the candle centered under the lid.
- You light the candle and set the timer. The lid stays open while the candle burns.
- The timer runs down. When it reaches zero, the lid closes over the candle.
- The flame goes out. With the lid closed, the flame runs out of air and is extinguished, without wax being blown around.
What to look for in an automatic candle extinguisher
- Fit: make sure it holds the size of jar candle you actually buy. Measure your candle's width and height. See our guide to measuring a jar candle.
- A lid that fully covers the candle: the flame needs to be enclosed to go out reliably.
- Power: check whether it is battery powered or rechargeable.
- Design: it sits out in your room, so it should look good when it is not in use.
